Overview: Deel 11 van de Volledige Werken van Willem Frederik Hermans laat in een bonte verzameling beschouwend proza uit de jaren zestig en zeventig van de twintigste eeuw veel aspecten van de intussen gevestigde schrijver zien. Uit het midden van de jaren zestig is Hermans’ eerste essaybundel Het sadistische universum (1964). Het woord ‘essay’ beviel de schrijver overigens niet: hij verbasterde het tot ‘esseej’ en verwierp de gebruikelijke vormen van dit genre. Hermans noemde zijn teksten liever ‘prozastukken’, en hij koos ze uit de honderden artikelen die hij sinds 1945 had geschreven.Van een heel ander kaliber was de in de vermomming van de jezuïetenpater Anastase Prudhomme geschreven tekst Annum Veritatis uit 1968, die de draak stak met de opvattingen van de rooms-katholieke kerk over seksuele moraal. Weer een heel andere Hermans leerden de lezers in 1969 kennen in het reisverslag De laatste resten tropisch Nederland. De bestemming van de reis waren de Nederlandse Antillen en het geboorteland van Hermans’ echtgenote Emmy, Suriname.In de bundel Het sadistische universum 2. Van Wittgenstein tot Weinreb staat de auteur weer venijnig en polemisch midden in het politieke debat, zeker als het gaat om een kwestie die hem nog jarenlang zou bezighouden: de Weinreb-affaire. Daarnaast bevat deel 11 van de Volledige Werken nog de gelegenheidsuitgave Machines in bikini (1974), een verhandeling over stroomlijn en techniek die oorspronkelijk met Rudy Kousbroek was opgezet als gezamenlijke – maar later gestrande – onderneming. Dit deel van Hermans’ beschouwende werk sluit af met de verzameling aforismen Dinky Toys, die in 1976 als bibliofiele editie verscheen.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. A solid 4 stars from me.

Finished it in a couple of days. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
