Overview: Parmi les spécialités traitant de la santé des femmes, la gynécologie occupe une place à part : à la différence de l’obstétrique ou de la chirurgie gynécologique, elle ne porte pas sur un moment particulier de la vie corporelle, la maladie, la grossesse ou l’accouchement, mais consiste à suivre les patientes sans justification médicale apparente de la puberté jusqu’à la mort. Cette injonction, qui n’a bien sûr pas d’équivalent pour les hommes (il n’existe pas d’« andrologie »), correspond à ce qu’Aurore Koechlin appelle la « norme gynécologique ».Pour l’étudier, elle a choisi de mener une enquête ethnographique au long cours, sur plusieurs terrains, auprès de praticien·ne·s et de patientes. Ainsi, elle interroge en féministe, au plus près de l’expérience, la nécessité du suivi gynécologique, la manière dont les femmes le vivent et la curieuse pathologisation du corps féminin qu’il implique. Elle retrace les étapes de la « carrière gynécologique », identifie ses effets, notamment psychiques, examine les relations médecins/patientes et l’inégale qualité des soins prodigués selon la classe et la race, et, enfin, s’intéresse aux résistances, partielles ou totales, à cette norme gynécologique, qui prennent par exemple la forme de l’auto-gynécologie.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.

Not bad, but not my favorite. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
