Sem anticomunismo barato e com muita seriedade, o livro discorre sobre a constituição da RDA em um Estado separado, o funcionamento da sociedade e quais valores determinavam a vida cotidiana dos seus cidadãos – bem como aborda aquilo que aconteceu após a unificação, especialmente no terreno da economia. Embora a unificação tenha proporcionado aos alemães orientais acesso a uma sociedade mais rica, à liberdade de viajar pelo mundo e uma relativa descentralização política, também trouxe consigo desemprego, colapso social e perda de esperança, especialmente nas áreas rurais, antes prósperas.

A very satisfying read. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
