Overview: Sita groeit op in het Suriname van de jaren vijftig, ergens tussen het oerwoud en de stad, in een gebied waar mango- en guavebomen groeien en de muskieten onophoudelijk gonzen. Te midden van die natuur vol avonturen zou Sita zich het liefst verliezen in de po‘zie van de Tachtigers. De stilte in huis beklemt haar en roept vragen bij haar op. Waarom praat niemand over het verleden? Waarom verliet haar grootvader de familie en vertrok hij na het aflopen van zijn arbeidscontract terug naar India? Haar zoektocht naar antwoorden loopt telkens op niets uit. Niemand kan of wil haar helpen. In de tussentijd moet ze zich staande houden op school, tussen haar klasgenoten van verschillende afkomst, die tegenstrijdige opvattingen hebben over religie en emancipatie. Ze moet vechten voor haar toekomst, voor een plek binnen de maatschappij die als een gevaarlijk oerwoud voelt. Als ze vlak na haar examens zwanger wordt van haar buurtgenoot Islam, zit er niets anders op dan met hem in het huwelijk te treden. Het betekent het einde van de toekomst die ze voor ogen had, waarin ze eindelijk vrij zou zijn. Dat stelt haar voor eenzelfde vraag als haar kiest ze voor zichzelf, of voor haar familie? It was just alright. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
