Overview: Was kann Liebe überwinden?Maja wächst in Ostdeutschland auf. Ihre Mutter Astrid ist eine Karrierefrau, sie hat zwar ein Alkoholproblem, geht aber aus der Wende als Gewinnerin hervor. Majas Vater Wolf weiß hingegen nach der Wende nichts mehr mit sich anzufangen. Ein Teil der Familie driftet nach rechts. Eitans Vater ist mit Holocaust-Überlebenden aufgewachsen – Eitans Großmutter hat Theresienstadt zwar überlebt, sitzt seitdem aber tagtäglich am Fenster und wartet auf die Rückkehr ihres in Auschwitz ermordeten Bruders Sigi. Seine Mutter stammt aus dem Irak, aus dem ihre Familie nach einem Pogrom nach Israel geflohen ist. Als Maja und Eitan sich begegnen, prallen zwei Welten und zwei Leben aufeinander. Eigentlich ist es die eine, die ganz große Liebe. Aber Eitan fühlt sich nicht wohl in Deutschland und Maja nicht in Israel. Für Eitan ist es wesentlich, dass Maja Jüdin wird, doch sie kämpft mit dem Glauben. Alef erzählt die Geschichte zweier Familien, einer deutschen und einer israelischen. Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.

I liked it for the most part. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Not bad at all.
