Overview: We need to be aware that many animals have lives filled with suffering, as in theexamples above. Such cases are much more numerous than we might initiallybelieve. We can see this in the way animal populations evolve — and in theirjuvenile mortality rates. A key factor determining this is the reproductivestrategy that different animals follow. In nature, some animals reproduce byhaving only one offspring at a time. These are animals who typically giveextensive parental care to their offspring, in order to maximize their likelihoodof survival. However, most animals follow a different reproductive strategy:bringing into existence a very large number of offspring. Their survival ratesat the beginning of their lives are typically very low. If the animals reproducejust once during their lives and their populations remain stable, on averageonly two of their offspring per litter or clutch makes it to adulthood (that is,one per parent). If they reproduce several times, the average number whosurvive from each clutch decreases.Some of these animals might survive for some time even if they don’tmanage to reach maturity. But in many cases, they die shortly after they havestarted to exist. Some of them might never develop into sentient beings. Butmany of them do, and they typically die in ways that are likely to be painful,sometimes extremely so. They starve to death, are killed by other animals, ordie from other factors such as cold or disease. Many of these animals diebefore they have a chance to enjoy any positive experiences in their lives. Theymight experience little more than the pain of their deaths, so suffering appearsto outweigh happiness in their lives. Unfortunately, these animals areprobably the majority of those who come into existence. This is the mainreason wild animal suffering is of great importance. Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Not bad at all.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Glad someone recommended this to me. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.
