Overview: Desde los inicios del Romanticismo hasta los años 70 del siglo XX, durante algo más de siglo y medio, las tertulias de café fueron una de las grandes instituciones de la vida literaria española e incluso de la vida española en general. Rarísimos son los escritores y los periodistas que vivieron ajenos a las tertulias de todo tipo y pelaje, y libros como los dos tomos de Ramón Gómez de la Pombo (1918) y La sagrada cripta de Pombo (1924) o esta Historia de una tertulia (1952) resultan de imprescindible lectura para los interesados en esta temática deliciosa. La tertulia a la que hace referencia el título es la del madrileño café Lyon d’Or, en la calle Alcalá, capitaneada por el muy erudito y taurófilo José María de Cossío. En torno a él se reunieron tras la guerra civil escritores, periodista, pintores y toreros, magistralmente retratados, con amenísima naturalidad, por Antonio Díaz Cañabate. Nuestra edición cuenta además con un bien informado prólogo de Marino Gómez Santos, testigo gozosamente vivo de aquella tertulia, amigo personal de Antonio Díaz Cañabate y autor él mismo de otro libro inexcusable sobre las tertulias madrileñ Crónica del café Gijon (1955). Antonio Díaz-Cañabate (Madrid, 1897-1980) publicó su primer libro, Historia de una taberna, en 1944, cerca ya de los 50 años. Es por lo tanto un escritor tardío y más bien a contramano de los escalafones y los convencionalismos literarios. Sin ser exactamente un periodista ni gustarle los toros, fue el crítico taurino más respetado durante tres décadas. Durante muchos años también ejerció como crítico teatral en la revista Semana de Manuel Halcón. Amigo, colaborador y contertulio de José María de Cossío, dirigió la publicación de los tomos quinto y sexto de la enciclopedia taurina Los Toros y mantuvo larga amistad y numerosas tertulias, a las que fue muy aficionado, con importantes personalidades de su José Ortega y Gasset, Sebastián Miranda, Zuloaga, Luis Calvo, Julio Camba y otros muchos escritores, pintores, médicos y toreros. Entre sus libros no taurinos merecen también Historia de una tertulia (1952), Historias del tren (1959), Madrid y los Madriles (1974) y Tertulia de anécdotas (1974). No escribió narrativa, poesía ni teatro, pero su prosa es una prosa limpia, vivísima, llena de amenidad, a la que toda impostura y artificiosidad le es ajena, pero que no deviene necesariamente en costumbrismo como habitualmente se ha señalado.

Antonio Díaz Cañabate writes contemporary fiction and has always been fascinated by character-driven stories. I liked it for the most part. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. A solid 4 stars from me.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
