Overview: Le Roman de la Rose de Jean Renart est une des œuvres les plus neuves et les plus complexes du Moyen Âge. Il substitue à l'Ouest arthurien l'Est impérial autour de l'empereur Conrad qui nous offre comme une synthèse des attributs des trois principaux personnages, le jongleur Jouglet, le chevalier Guillaume de Dole et sa sœur, la belle Liénor, en même temps qu'une réflexion sur la souveraineté, ses fondements et sa légitimité. Pour Jean Renart, le romancier doit rechercher le vraisemblable, au sens narratif du terme, par la logique des actions, et le véritable, en entretenant l'effet de réel dans la description des êtres et des choses. Ainsi assiste-t-on à la création du "nouveau roman" médiéval par une géographie plus précise, par des héros pseudo-historiques au milieu de personnages secondaires bien réels, nommément désignés, contemporains de l'auteur et contemporains entre eux, par des interventions fréquentes du narrateur, par des dialogues qui se rapprochent de la conversation courante, par l'élargissement de l'univers romanesque aux jongleurs, aux vavasseurs et aux bourgeois détenteurs de la richesse et du pouvoir économique. De surcroît, Renart fait de la littérature avec la littérature de son temps et même avec sa propre littérature (Le Lai de l'Ombre). Il est une innovation dont il se flatte dans son prologue : il a entrelacé le texte narratif, sans en rompre la cohérence, de poèmes lyriques, aristocratiques et populaires, dont il nous offre une véritable anthologie. Good, but not quite perfect. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Not bad at all.
