Overview: Sam Fraunces was an internationally known restaurant owner and innkeeper in colonial New York City. He owned a waxwork exhibit before Madame Tussaud at his resort called Vauxhall. He was also a free Black man.He first saved George Washington from assassination when he uncovered a British plot to poison him and his staff and invade New York City. His quick thinking saved Washington and allowed him to arrest the plotters and prevent the invasion. He saved Washington again when he uncovered the plot by Benedict Arnold to capture and kill Washington and Rochambeau at West Point and defect with them as his prisoners.Sam was a spy in British occupied New York during the war, as chef to the Royal Governor, passing on important intelligence and taking food left overs to the prisons to feed starving prisoners of war. He helped many prisoners escape and provided food, clothing and money.After the war he came out of retirement to serve as the first Presidential Steward to the first Executive Mansions of the US supervising slaves and free staff in New York and Philadelphia.There are few true accounts of Blacks in Colonial America. Sam was an important spy in the American Revolution and risked his life for years to help the Patriot cause.The book is historically accurate with footnotes and provides a good overview to anyone interested in the Revolution and Black history and the people who had hard choices to make, and what happened to them as a result.

Finished it in a couple of days. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
