Excerpt from The King's Letter, Translated Into Irish: With a Grammatical Introduction to the Irish Language, and Reading Lessons, for the Use of His Majesty's Irish Subjects Greek, but not to translate, or to get by rote passages in Greek authorsz - how would such a scheme of tuition be approved of Yet, if you will suppose the scholar the son of a Highland or a Connaught peasant, and for Greek substitute English, you have a specimen of the erroneous method so frequently adopted. Scotland has lately discovered this defect, after a trial of upwards of a century; and Ireland has yet to be taught the fallacy of the system. It has been suggested, that many, otherwise eu lightened persons, may fear that any encouragement to 'the revival of the Irish language may be inju rious, by delaying its decline, and' the consequent extension of the English. This decline does not appear to me so rapid as it may to others: but with respect to the extension of the English language, I think it more likely to be promoted by the culti vation of the Irish. This will Open to the native student an easy path to the first rudiments of know ledge: and when these are obtained, emulation will soon excite him to the acquisition of the English lauv guage, on which his hopes depend and he will speedily outstrip the scholar who has been merely taught, like a parrot, to pronounce, by signals, words which convey to his mind no meaning whatever. A revival of the Irish language does not infer a depression of the English; but it is much to be wished, that many of those who speak but one of these languages, should learn to speak both. Nor is this difficult for the young: neither is it uncommon for a considerable proportion of the population of other countries to use two languages; as may be instanced in the Netherlands, in the maritime towns of Europe, in some of the smaller States of Ger.
