Overview: Nikolai Berdyaev: The Russian Religious Philosopher Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev (Berdiaev) was a prolific writer, both before his exile from Russia in 1922, and afterwards in the West until his death in 1948.He was often referred to as a Christian existentialist, though his thought differs in significant ways from the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre as well as other existential thinkers. Nevertheless, Berdyaev embraced key existential ideas, particularly that of freedom. For him freedom was the fundamental metaphysical reality upon which all else is based. From the primary notion of freedom he developed his own existential interpretation of ultimate truth in terms of subjectivity rather than objectivity. In doing this, he offered a critique of modern rationalism and instead vigorously defended the intrinsic value of the human person and the creative life of the spirit.Vita Auctoris: The author was born at Detroit in 1896, attended the University of Detroit, and has graduated and awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1918. He entered, the Jesuit novitiate at Florissant, Missouri the following year, and was engaged until 1922 in the study of asceticism and in a review of the Classics. From 1922 to 1924 he studied advanced philosophy at Saint Louis University, was instructor in English and Latin at Regis College, Denver, until 1927, returned that year to Saint Louis University, and there studied theology until 1951, being ordained to the priesthood in 1930. During the year 1931-32 he was associate professor of philosophy at Loyola University, Chicago, devoted the following year to further work in ascetic and mystical theology at the Saint Stanislaus Seminary, Brooklyn, Ohio, the Jesuit Tertianship, put in another year of Special study in philosophy at Saint Louis University, was professor of ethics at the newly-opened Jesuit scholasticata at West Baden, Indiana, during the year 1934-35» and returned once more to Saint Louis University in the fall of that year to complete his doctorate program in philosophy.

An average read for me. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Just right down the middle.

Such a great read. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Would probably read it again at some point.

It was okay. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. A generous 3 stars.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Enjoyable weekend read.
