Overview: Napakahalaga ng baybayin sa etnograpiyang Filipino. Ito ang isang natatangi (o baka pinakanatatangi) sa mga katibayan ng naabot na antas ng pagkahubog sa kulturang Filipino bago dumating ang mga banyagang mananakop. Ang ibig ko pang sabihin, malinaw na ebidensya ito ng awtentikong sinauna't katutubo. Kaya noong 1884 at ilathala ni Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera ang kaniyang aklat na Contribucion para el estudio de los antiguos alfabetos Filipino ay nasambit niyang may kahalong pagtataka na ang etnografia filipina ay umaakit ng atensiyon ng mga iskolar na Europeo ("á los alemanes y á los austriacos") ngunit halos hindi pansin ng mga Espanyol. Hindi niya kasi nabasa ang Ortografia y reglas de la lengua tagalog acomodas a sus propios caracteres ni Don Pedro Andrés de Castro, na sinulat noong 1776 at nailathala lamang sa unang pagkakataon noon 1930.
