Overview: Edouard Manet (Paris, 1832 OCo 1883)Manet est l'un des plus c(r)l bres artistes de la seconde moiti(r) du XIXe si cle, li(r) aux impressionnistes sans faire vraiment partie de leur groupe. Ch(r)rissant son ind(r)pendance, il eut une grande influence sur la peinture fran aise, en partie due au choix de ses sujets tir(r)s de la vie quotidienne, de son usage de couleurs pures et de sa technique rapide et libre. C'est son ouvre qui assura la transition entre le r(r)alisme de Courbet et la vision novatrice des impressionnistes.Issu de la grande bourgeoisie, il choisit de devenir peintre apr s avoir rat(r) son entr(r)e a l'Ecole navale. Il se forma aupr s de Thomas Couture, un peintre acad(r)mique, mais c'est groce a ses nombreux voyages a travers l'Europe qu'il entreprit d s 1852, qu'il commen a a se faire une id(r)e de ce qu'allait -tre son style propre.Ses premi res peintures (r)taient essentiellement des sc nes de genre, inspir(r)es par son amour pour les ma-tres espagnols comme Velazquez et Goya, et le portrait. C'est en 1863 qu'il pr(r)senta son chef-d'ouvre Le D(r)jeuner sur l'herbe au Salon des refus(r)s. Son ouvre d(r)clenchant une pol(r)mique entre les d(r)fenseurs de l'art acad(r)mique et les jeunes artistes 1/2refus(r)s, il devint le chef de file de cette nouvelle g(r)n(r)ration d'artistes.A partir de 1864, le salon officiel accepta ses travaux, provoquant toujours de v(r)h(r)mentes protestations comme ce fut le cas avec Olympia en 1865. En 1866, l'(r)crivain Zola (r)crivit un article en faveur du travail de Manet. A cette (r)poque, le peintre (r)tait ami avec tous les futurs grands ma-tres impressionnistes: Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro et Paul C(r)zanne, qui s'influen aient les uns les autres; pourtant il restait d(r)lib(r)r(r)ment a l'ext(r)rieur du groupe. En effet, en 1874 il refusa de pr(r)senter ses peintures lors de leur premi re exposition. I was pleasantly surprised. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. A solid 5/5 for me.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

An average read for me. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
