Overview: Herman Gorter (1864-1927) is nog altijd een geliefd dichter om wat hij schreef als twintiger: zijn lyrische epos Mei (1889) en zijn wilde lyriek uit Verzen (1890). Weinigen weten dat hij precies tussen die twee klassiekers nòg een meesterwerk schreef. Een dag in ’t jaar is een groot gedicht over een jongen die zijn veilige torenkamer achterlaat voor een tocht naar de grote stad, waarin het Amsterdam van eind negentiende eeuw te herkennen valt. Daar aangekomen wordt de sensitieve dichter overvallen door de prikkels die het stadsleven te bieden heeft. Is aanvankelijk alles mooi, jong en lente, gaandeweg verandert het straatbeeld en blijkt de grootstad ook een bedreigende jungle waarin het ‘zwarte mannengespuis’ ronddoolt op zoek naar wijn en ‘bloedig vleesch’. In dit zorgvuldig gecomponeerde gedicht verstrijkt behalve een dag en een jaar ook een mensenleven – ja zelfs een hele beschaving. Een dag in ’t jaar bevat de meest duistere en decadente poëzie van een geboren natuurdichter.Waarom Gorter Een dag in ’t jaar nooit heeft willen publiceren, wordt in een uitgebreide toelichting uitgeplozen door neerlandicus Johan Sonnenschein (1980). In 2012 promoveerde hij op de studie Kentering wending knik. Dynamiek in modern dichterschap (over Gorter, Nijhoff en Willem Jan Otten). Eerder publiceerde hij over Gorters socialistische epos Pan in het tijdschrift nY, waarvan hij redacteur is. Hij essayeert over hedendaagse poëzie en is lector aan de Université de Liège.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. A solid 4 stars from me.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Enjoyable weekend read.

A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.

Not bad, but not my favorite. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Pretty good overall. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Still a good book.
