Overview: يتضمن الكتاب فصولاً ستة يتناول أولها فعل التعذيب من الناحية التاريخية متتبعاً تطور تعريفاته، وأساليبه النفسية والجسدية، ثم تنتقل الفصول التالية بالقارئ إلى التعمق في مفهوم "الصدمة" ومدى تأثيرها على الأشخاص وخصوصية التعذيب باعتباره إحدى الخبرات شديدة الوطأة والإيلام، حيث ينعدم فيها شعور المرء بالقدرة على التحكم في البيئة المحيطة به، بل ويختفي إحساسه باستطاعته السيطرة على ذاته وجسده، وبإمكانية التنبوء بما هو قادم في اللحظات التالية. يتطرق الكتاب كذلك إلى وصف الآثار والتبعات التي يخلفها التعذيب في أرواح وأبدان ضحاياه، وإلى طرق المقاومة والتكيف، وأنماط التأقلم على أوضاع الاحتجاز المروعة، وما يفعله المعتقلون كي يتمكنوا من الاحتفاظ بقدر من الاتزان في ظل ظروف شديدة القسوة لا يحكمها منطق. يحوي الكتاب فصلاً بعنوان الجلاد والنظام، ترصد فيه المؤلفة الصورة التي قد يكونها الجلاد عن نفسه، وصورته لدى الجمهور، وخطاب النظام الذي يبرر للتعذيب، وكذلك علاقة الإعجاب الملتبسة والعجيبة التي قد تنشأ بين الضحية والجلاد، وبعض الدراسات والتجارب الميدانية التي تختبر إمكانية تحول شخص عاد إلى شخص يمارس التعذيب.ينتهي الكتاب بفصل مثير حول علاقة الأطباء بمنظومة التعذيب وفيه تتطرق المؤلفة لفرعين هما الطب الشرعي وكذلك الطب النفسي حيث يتم استغلال المصحات النفسية في احتجاز المعارضين للنظم السياسية، ويحوي هذا الفصل أمثلة من الصين والاتحاد السوفيتي ومصر، وتأتي الخاتمة لتجمع بعض النقاط الجدلية في مجال العلم من ناحية، ولتؤكد أن الصمت عن صنوف القمع والإذلال لم يعد من ناحية أخرى بديلاً أمناً لكافة الأطراف.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.
