Ao invés de apresentar uma crítica política das estruturas de exceção que constituem a administração totalitária, Žižek defende que a própria noção de “totalitarismo”, longe de ser um conceito teórico efetivo, é essencialmente um tapa “em vez de possibilitar nosso pensamento, forçando-nos a adquirir uma nova visão sobre a realidade histórica que ela descreve, ela nos desobriga de pensar, ou nos impede ativamente de pensar”. A fim de explicar seu raciocínio, ele "Na embalagem do chá verde Celestial Seasonings há uma breve explicação de seus benefí `O chá verde é uma fonte natural de antioxidantes que neutralizam os radicais livres, moléculas nocivas ao nosso corpo. Controlando os radicais livres, os antioxidantes ajudam o corpo a manter a saúde`. Mutatis mutandis, a noção de totalitarismo não é um dos principais antioxidantes ideológicos, cuja função durante toda sua existência foi controlar os radicais livres e, assim, ajudar o corpo social a manter sua saúde político-ideológica?". Aqui o filósofo não teme afirmar que os principais setores intelectuais, tanto à direita quanto à esquerda, se situam em campos ideológicos idênticos. "Em toda a sua existência, o `totalitarismo` foi uma noção ideológica que amparou a complexa operação de `controle dos radicais livres`, de garantia da hegemonia liberal-democrática, rejeitando a crítica de esquerda de que a democracia liberal seria o anverso, a `irmã gêmea` da ditadura fascista de direita. E é inútil tentar salvar o `totalitarismo` dividindo-o em subcategorias (enfatizando a diferença entre a variedade fascista e a comunista): no momento em que aceitamos a noção de `totalitarismo`, entramos firmemente no horizonte liberal-democrático”. A fusão explosiva entre psicanálise lacaniana, crítica da economia política marxista e filosofia hegeliana se volta para solapar o consenso liberal-democrático que gera a designação de totalitarismo. Para Žižek, é preciso ter a ousadia inicial de quebrar sem temor esses tabus “E daí se formos acusados de ‘antidemocraticos’, ‘totalitarios’...”. Não se trata de salvar a experiência hitlerista ou a stalinista da sombra do totalitarismo – Žižek, aliás, é o primeiro a criticar as contradições do comunismo real –, mas sim de demonstrar como o termo diz mais sobre a própria ideologia neoliberal que a projeta. O “totalitarismo” é definido por Žižek em termos de quatro noções o Holocausto como o supremo Mal diabólico; o gulag stalinista como a suposta verdade por trás do projeto revolucionário socialista; fundamentalismos étnicos e religiosos, que devem ser combatidos através da tolerância multicultural; e a ideia desconstrucionista de que a derradeira raiz do totalitarismo é o fechamento ontológico do pensamento. À consciência liberal hegemônica basta um flerte com algum desses tabus “totalitários” para desqualificar qualquer crítica ao status quo. Os cinco ensaios que compõem o livro abordam o fenômeno do totalitarismo de forma lateral. Mobilizando um instrumental teórico interdisciplinar, unindo metafísica à cultura pop através dos mais variados temas de Hamlet, Dalai Lama, Steven Spielberg, Ghandi, economia política soviética, mito de Édipo, Shostakovich, islamismo, entre outras referências atuais, Žižek se esquiva do lugar-comum para apresentar uma provocativa crítica cultural de nosso tempo. O próprio filósofo abre cada “intervenção” com um resumo irônico, a começar pela introdução, “Sobre antioxidantes ideológicos”, “que, apresentando ao leitor impetuoso o conteúdo do livro, explica por que o totalitarismo é e foi, desde os primórdios, um tapa buraco”; seguida pelo capítulo 1, “O mito e suas vicissitudes”, “em que o leitor se surpreenderá ao descobrir que o mito é um fenômeno secundário que advém da comédia social; como bônus, o leitor também conhecerá o segredo do surgimento de uma bela mulher”; pelo capítulo 2, “Hitler ironista?”, “em que o leitor, além de descobrir o que se passava na mente de Hitler enquanto planejava e cometia seus crimes hediondos, descobrirá por que nós, hoje, demonstramos respeito às vitimas do Holocausto pela risada”; pelo capítulo 3, “Quando o partido comete suicídio”, “em que o leitor primeiro será iniciado nos segredos dos expurgos stalinistas; no final, no entanto, ele se surpreenderá ao descobrir que até mesmo o mais obscuro stalinismo abriga uma dimensão redentora”; pelo capítulo 4, “A melancolia e o ato”, “em que o leitor se surpreenderá ao descobrir que quem não é melancólico, ou não concorda que somos lançados em um universo contingente finito, pode hoje ser suspeito de ‘totalitarismo’”; e, por fim, pelo capítulo 5, “Os ...

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. A solid 4 stars from me.
