Overview: Ibn Khaldûn (1332-1406) est l’historien musulman le plus célèbre en Occident. Célèbre à juste titre : il a totalement renouvelé l’écriture de l’histoire. Dans Le Livre des Exemples, son grand œuvre, il élabore et applique une «science de la société humaine» qui préfigure les sciences sociales modernes, anthropologie culturelle ou sociologie, et l’histoire des institutions politiques. Il s'intéresse d’une part à ce qu’il appelle «l’histoire vue de l’intérieur», une «histoire conceptuelle» ou «histoire-science» dont témoigne, au tome I de cette édition, son essai-préface, la Muqaddima ; et d’autre part à une histoire événementielle, «histoire-récit» qui pour l’essentiel relate les faits et événements en relation avec la formation et la chute des empires et des principautés – et dont l'Histoire des Arabes et des Berbères du Maghreb, qui fait l’objet du second volume, est la composante la plus originale.En évoquant les déplacements des tribus arabes, et notamment la pénétration de certainesd’entre elles en Afrique du Nord – une catastrophe historique à ses yeux —, Ibn Khaldûn illustre les vues développées dans la Muqaddima au sujet de l'incapacité de ces tribus à former des États étendus et centralisés. En décrivant dans le détail les formations politiques alors constituées, et les alliances des Arabes avec les royaumes et principautés berbères, il donne la clef permettant de comprendre l'histoire nord-africaine, depuis le XIe siècle jusqu’au XIVe siècle (sans parler des enseignements que l’on peut en tirer pour notre temps). Quant à l’histoire des Berbères – le seul récit historique médiéval complet sur ce sujet –, elle est une source irremplaçable de connaissances sur ces sociétés, sur «leurs vertus et leurs nobles qualités», sur leur rôle politique et militaire lors des conquêtes musulmanes de l’Ifrîqiya, du Maghreb et de l’Espagne, sur leurs hommes illustres, leurs saints et leurs savants.L'Histoire des Arabes et des Berbères du Maghreb est donc l’indispensable complément du pan théorique de l'œuvre d’Ibn Khaldûn. Elle est tout entière construite à partir des concepts fondamentaux exposés dans la Muqaddima, de l’«esprit de clan» (’asabiyya) à la «dynastie» (dawla) en passant par la «nation» (umma). Sans doute la comprendrait-on mal si l’on oubliait que son auteur est un homme du Moyen Âge ; mais il est impossible de ne pas voir les similitudes qu’elle présente sur bien des points avec les approches modernes, par exemple celles d’un Fernand Braudel sur la temporalité historique.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Worth the time and money.

It was okay. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.
