Overview: Aquest volum reuneix un conjunt d'assaigs, escrits en èpoques i en ocasions molt diverses, que pretenen ser una proposta de lectura històrica, no una juxtaposició mecànica i descriptiva o ideològica de monografies sobre les grans figures, ni sobre els moviments estètics en lliça. En la introducció, l'autor estableix el caràcter general de la proposta. I en els catorze assaigs o fragments que configuren la seva artilleria, aprofundeix en els punts que considera més rellevants. Els catorze assaigs s'agrupen en dues la primera, sobre l'aventura de la idea de «modernitat», i la segona, sobre el bloqueig franquista i la voluntat de supervivència. S'afegeix a la primera un assaig sobre una ramificació literària que no s'ha tingut fins ara gaire en compte, la produïda en terres de l'Amèrica Llatina abans de l'arribada de l'exili republicà del trenta-nou i que, sens dubte, li va fer de suport. I, a la segona, unes reflexions generals fetes en els inicis de la democràcia que, en certa mesura, poden servir d'epíleg. Els assaigs o fragments, tot i ser responsables d'ells mateixos, es complementen els uns als altres i, si es llegeixen dins el marc fixat en la introducció i s'estableixen entre ells les connexions oportunes, poden donar una idea aproximada i en viu del que ha estat la literatura del darrer segle. En definitiva, una obra que ve a omplir buits, que ofereix una visió innovadora del que ha estat la literatura catalana del segle XX, des del modernisme del tombant de segle fins a la contracultura dels anys setanta, i que culmina amb una reflexió sobre el present i el futur de la cultura i la llengua catalanes.

Not bad, but not my favorite. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Just right down the middle.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Still a good book.

Really enjoyed this one. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Worth the time and money.
