Overview: Liebe Leserin, lieber LeserDer Kalte Krieg ist ein abgeschlossenes Kapitel der Geschichte – das lehrt die einschlägige historische Fachliteratur, und so erzählen wir es auch in dieser Ausgabe vonG EOEPOCHE. Er begann, als kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die siegreiche Anti-Hit ler- Koalition zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten, Großbri ntaienn und Stalins Sowjetunion an ihren ideologischen Widers-prü chen und außenpolitischen Gegensätzen zerbrach. Mehr als 40 Jahre lang standen sich in der Folge die Supermächte USA und UdSSR in einem unerklärten Krieg gegenüber und errichteten Machtblöcke aus Verbündeten um sich. Immer wieder brachen an der Peripherie ihrer Einflusssphären Kämpfe aus, etwa in Korea und Vietnam, doch niemals kam es zur offenen Konfrontation der beiden Hauptkontrahenten. Das verhinderte das Gleichgewicht des die offene (und glaubhafte) Drohung, dass ein Angriff der einen Macht von der anderen mit Atombomben beantwortet würde – und damit das Ende der menschlichen Zivilisation gekommen wäre. Und, so berichten Historiker weiter, der Kalte Krieg endete, als die Sowjetunion in den 1980er Jahren durch eine tiefe ökonomische und soziale Krise derart geschwächt -wur de, dass sie nicht mehr in der Lage war, das immens teure Wettrüsten mitzuhalten – und deshalb implodierte. Doch nun scheinen sich die Anzeichen dafür zu m-eh ren, dass der Kalte Krieg in Wirklichkeit nicht im Dezember 1991 mit der Selbstauflösung der UdSSR endete, sondern nach einer kurzen Tauwetter-Phase jetzt fortgesetzt wird; von einemc old war flashba cskchreibt die "New York Times". Und zwar in den Mustern von damals – und sogar mit dem alten Die Hymne Russlands erklingt heute -wie der in der 1944 vom Sowjetdiktator Josef Stalin eingeführten Melodie. Doch dabei bleibt es nicht. Abermals regiert im Kreml ein Alleinherrscher, ein ehemaliger KGB-Offizier mit nahezu unumschränkter Macht, gestützt auf die Dominanz einer Partei. Wiederum liquidiert der russische Gehe-im dienst Ex-Agenten im westlichen Ausland, woraufhin die von früher wohlbekannte Welle von Ausweisungen und Gegen-Ausweisungen von diplomatischem Personal beginnt. Russischen militärischen Manövern an der westlichen Grenze, in der Ostsee und im Schwarzen Meer folgen M-anö ver der NATO – und umgekehrt. Washington hat eine- ge waltige Erhöhung des amerikanischen Militärhaushalts beschlossen, US-Präsident Donald Trump kündigte die M- o dernisierung und Neuentwicklung von Nuklearwaffen an. Woraufhin auch Russlands Präsident Wladimir Putin den Bau neuer Interkontinentalraketen bekannt gegeben hat, die jeweils 24 Atomsprengköpfe mit gewaltiger Vernichtu-ngs kraft an jeden Ort auf dem Globus transportieren können. Und erneut kommt es zu blutigen Stellvertreterkriegen, in Syrien und der Ukraine. Zwar entfällt heute der ideologische Hintergrund, kann man nicht mehr von einer Konfrontation der Systeme s-pre chen. Dennoch bleiben es beunruhigende Indizien – und sie scheinen sich zu einem Bild zu dass diese A-us gabe von GEOEPOCHE mög licher w eise aktueller ist, als uns lieb sein könnte. * Im Juli 2018 jährt sich zu m 75. Mal der die Zerstörung Hamburgs durch alliierte Luftangriffe im Sommer 1943. Aus diesem Anlass wird es eine Sonderausgabe v on GEOEPOCHE PANORAMA geben, die in ausführliche n Bildstrecken und Texten jene Tage beschreibt, als der vom NS- Regime in die Welt getr-a gene Krieg auf Deutschland zurückfiel. Ein Thema, das mindestens so bedrückend ist wie der Kalte Krieg, bei dem die Aktualität aber glücklicherweise nur auf den Jahrestag bezogen ist.
