Overview: Bij Thomas thuis houdt men vast aan het Woord. Ieder avond wordt uit de Bijbel voorgelezen, en Thomas kent al hele stukken uit zijn hoofd. Stukken die hij op zijn manier interpreteert en in verbinding brengt met wat er dagelijks allemaal om hem heen gebeurt. Vaders die aan het Woord vasthouden hebben weinig gevoel voor humor, en de gevolgen zijn dan ook verschrikkelijk. Aanvankelijk voor Thomas en voor zijn moeder, maar uiteindelijk voor vader. Daar zorgen onvoorziene hulptroepen voor: in eerste instantie Thomas grote zus Margot - die helemaal niet zo'n suffe gymnasiumtrut blijkt te zijn als Thomas altijd dacht. En daarnaast mevrouw Van Amersfoort, die misschien wel 'komenist' is of iets anders heel verkeerds, maar die Thomas prachtige leesboeken meegeeft, en versjes van Annie M.G. Schmidt leert. Dat is iets anders dan de psalmen van zijn vader! Maar het leukste is misschien wel dat vader als de dood is voor mevrouw Van Amersfoort en haar vriendinnen. Gezamenlijk nemen de vrouwen het gezag over. En vader druipt met de staart tussen de benen af.Het is 1951. Voor Thomas en zijn familie loopt het op een tweede Bevrijding uit. Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
