Overview: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk'ün yazarlığı, askerliği ve devlet adamlığının gölgesinde kalmıştır. Oysa ki Mustafa Kemal daha Harp Akademisi'nden mezun olduğu dönemlerde mesleki kitapçıklar yazdı, çevirdi. Devlet adamlığı döneminde de Nutuk'unun yanı sıra Yurttaşlık Bilgisi ve Geometri kitaplarını kaleme aldı, tarih ders kitaplarının bazı bölümlerini yazdı. Nuri Conker (1881-1937), Atatürk'ün mahalle, okul, meslek ve silah arkadaşıydı. Trablusgarp'ta, Çanakkale'de ve Kurtuluş Savaşı'nda beraberdiler. Yazdığı tek kitap olan Zabit ve Kumandan, Mustafa Kemal'in Hasbihal'i kaleme almasına vesile oldu. Cumhuriyet döneminde komutanlık, diplomatlık ve milletvekilliği görevlerinde bulundu. 1914... Osmanlı Devleti, Balkan ve Trablusgarp savaşlarından yeni çıkmıştır. Osmanlı ordusunun iki genç subayı, bu savaşlarda yaşanan başarısızlıklar üzerine kafa yormaktadır. İlkin Nuri Conker Zabit ve Kumandan kitabında, sorunları ve çözüm önerilerini gündeme getirir. Dostu ve meslektaşı Mustafa Kemal, bu kitabı okur okumaz, Zabit ve Kumandan ile Hasbihal'i kaleme alır. Birbirini bütünleyen ve pekiştiren bu iki kitabın başlıca temalarından biri iyi yöneticiliktir. Her ikisi de, ordunun yaşadığı başarısızlığın asıl çözüm adresi olarak, komuta kademelerini gösterir. Askerler için hem bilimsel birikimin hem de cesaret ve kendi başına karar alma başta olmak üzere, pek çok bireysel niteliğin önemini ve gereğini savunur. Ancak çok geçmeden Osmanlı Devleti Birinci Dünya Savaşı'na girince, Mustafa Kemal de kitabını bastırmayı ertelemek zorunda kalır. Buna karşılık iki dost, Çanakkale'de Anafartalar ve Conk Bayırı'nda, kitaplarında yazdıklarının sözde kalmadığını kanıtlar. Birlikleri zorlu muharebelerden büyük başarılarla çıkar. Mustafa Kemal kitabını ancak, mütarekede döndüğü İstanbul'da, 1918 sonunda yayımlar. Kitabın basımından altı ay kadar sonra da Anadolu'ya geçerek İstanbul ile ilişiğini keser. Not bad, but not my favorite. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
